Laura Lee's amazing SX tone(Khruangbin)

Sorry, but I don't hear it. I don't hear "amazing". What I do hear is a bass sound with a little amp-like wooliness, but that is otherwise almost devoid of harmonic content or dynamics. To me it sounds muffled and nondescript.
FWIW, I play three basses strung with two types of flatwounds (a 1969 Fender Precision, and Fender Custom Shop Precision, and a Fodera Monarch-P). I'm into historical flatwound bass guitar sounds, and I have a formidable collection of vintage vacuum tubes and some nice audio circuits for using them in.
But I'm not getting this example. What should I be listening for, to hear what's amazing about it? Thanks.
Laura gets some incredible tone in the studio (which is a barn actually). It's about as close to the sound of an upright I've ever heard out of a bass guitar. She's neck pickup only, and has a bunch of foam under the bridge cover.

i find the tone pretty bland. actually i find the entire band pretty bland but that's a different story. i think since the bass dominates the mix more than usual people are associating it with good tone.

He's been in the band for most of a decade, so he clearly doesn't mind that much!
I have Khruangbin's latest album, and it is great background music. They seem like quite an eccentric band, with the wigs and the weird Thai Funk genre-jumping and stuff.
The SX bass sounds good in part because it has Dimarzio pickups installed. Beyond that, I reckon any cheap bass strung with flats, with a good pickup installed, and with a foam mute in the bridge, is going to sound like that. A good 'cooking' bass tone, much as the drummer is a good, economic 'pocket' player.
Yer spot on there @Axstar Nobody needs a high end P-bass if flats+foam mute are used. Glad you mentioned the wigs,had me wondering why the lad would sport the hairdo

I did not! I didn't know there was one! I'm on a Mustang high at the moment, though I'm still looking for a white Axstar bass.
I've never seen the band explain why they wear wigs, but they've been doing it for a while by the looks of it.
So they dont get recognised working at Tesco maybe
Here the Alien doesn't end till tomorrow. Still £10 and it would need all your healing powers to put right

It does nothing for my ears but if you dig it then you won't have to spend a mint to recreate that sound!

I have to admit, “low effort” and “pedestrian” are two terms I never associated with George Porter’s sound, but maybe I’m just an idiot.
I guess he should play more notes? :shrug:
I was thinking he should maybe step up to a real bass. Something expensive, with an 18v preamp and more than a measly 4 strings. He’s wasted his life playing such lowly music on such an unsophisticated instrument. What a fool.

I just don't see the reason for the high enthusiasm for another form of the same'ol same'ol that I've heard for almost fifty years!
The thumpy-dryness might not be everyone's cup of tea but it's a tone nonetheless and a good one at that. Lee pulls it off really well, it's clean, and it fits in with the trio niceley. Whats amazing about it is that it comes from an sx. I know it's been done to death, but whenever someone pulls off such a controlled tone with a cheap bass, it suprising to me. More people need to hear good tone coming out of instruments like that, IMO
Never thought I would see the Meters being trashed on here! You live and learn. I didn’t realise that making an ‘effort’ as a bassist consisted of getting a complex tone, rather than being a decent musician!!
