Double Bass Lazy Sting

Sting (Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner) is a pretentious ass who left The Police, an interesting though derivative band for a solo career. He released dribble like “Fields of Gold” and made a fortune. He was selected to appear and make comments on a program called “John Lennon’s Jukebox”. Sting mocked Lennon’s misspelling of Otis Redding’s name as “Ottis” showing a lack of respect for someone who learned from the blues and rock pioneers but contributed so much more to music and generations of people than Sting could ever hope to.

Good God there's some strong feelings here!

I actually don't mind his playing and I have seen him play more complex DB stuff!

And actually his solo stuff was more Jazzy than any of the police stuff!

I think that he has moved from playing to directing music!

I wish I had never asked now.....

@lorianb I was busy actually working when typing the question....

Testing out my multi tasking......

+1. Fields of Gold, 10 Summoners Tales, etc. some of those records have some decievingly complicated stuff in odd meters and what not. What he has lost in playing DB he has gained in musicality, composition writing, and singing. If you didn't notice it, then you were paying attention or listening with a closed mind.

Good for him. I don't see him push the DB much anymore since now all he doing is solidifying his legacy by singing all the tunes he wrote in the past.

this thread made me LOL

love him or not he has grown as a musician and to a high degree by having the $$ to hire first call jazz players like Brandord M & various great drummers

If I could afford to have CM back ME up- I'm there hahaha

Police were fun and subsequent projects have mostly been very high quality

I like it when a bassist makes good and succeeds - I'm sure he'd be the first to show appreciation for the opportunities

BTW the early DB stuff with the Cops was pretty inventive (not flashy) - one of his trademarks is NOT playing roots and/or changing the harmonic content via the bass note
some of those tunes are pretty tricky

You can read minds through a video? Amazing!

I'd actually have to know the guy for quite a while to discern such an attitude.

I have deleted my second post regarding Sting's ability on the upright bass. I liked The Police a lot; however I find most of the post-police stuff a little too precious. That said, speaking as a bassist who has scrimped and saved to buy a fine instrument, I was appalled at the nonchalance displayed when the bass fell. You have to be a jackass to see an instrument damaged and laugh about it. I don't need to know anything about the person to know that.

What do you want to do? Cry and throw himself on the floor in a fit of rage? It happens. Sometimes when something like that happens you have to laugh.

Envy is an ugly thing, but rampant in Internet forums ... none of us have a smidgen of Sting's talent and width of music making and producing skills and you guys fault him based on not playing the DB in some productions? Maybe because he has his hands full with a thousand other things and he is big enough to realize someone who is more specialized will serve the end result better?

Just came across this thread.

Declaration of interest: Police one of my favourite bands.

Right, now that's out of the way; pretty presumptive and kind of offensive statement to make that anyone is "too lazy" to play a particular instrument - what information would that statement be based on?
I saw Sting on the Symphonicities tour which I thought was superb - he didn't pick up a bass once all night never mind a DB - played a small acoustic or nothing at all - I didn't feel he was lazy, or even feel let down in any way that he didn't play bass - I just enjoyed the great show and different interpretation of his music.
I would suggest that, with the musical legacy he has behind him, he, as a musician, can choose to play it any way he likes - up to you whether or not you like that presentation, but criticising someone as lazy on the basis of not seeing him play a particular instrument seems rather strange to me.
Also saw the Police reunion tour where he played bass all night - also excellent and totally enjoyed it - very different interpretations of mostly same songs but each enjoyed for their own worth - it's about music not gear, for me anyway.
My 2c worth.

All I was saying is that I miss I him being th only bassist in the band. I remember the soul cages tour and the ten summoners tales and even mercury falling, where he switched between electric and acoustic. I think he sounded a million times better. And he allowed extended solos. It's sad to look at the past and think the present is worse.... God I'm an old man......
