Lee Sklar P Pickups released by EMG

Seems that EMG released the Lee Sklar P Pickups that are in his Frankenstein

129$ per piece.

Nice. I assumed these were just normal EMG P pickups with the old logo. But no, their writeup says that they also “tweaked the preamp” tonal response.

I remember reading that Lee said the originals would eat batteries! Hopefully they didn’t replicate that too….

I bought an EMG model P in the early 80s and installed in my '78 fretless.

A few years ago, I restored that bass to stock, since it's 45+ years old.

The EMG P Pickup sitting on the bench, and I really missed it, so i ordered an JVG body and found a used Tony Franklin neck - just to use the pickup!

That "franklinstein" with the model P is my favorite of several fretless Ps!

Would this fit in say, a made in mexico P?
Minimal modification with a Forstner bit and / or dremel should do it.
I think my buddy used a router back in the day... I wasn't "qualified" at the time... 😄

'78 on the left.... Black is JVG; (6lb 14oz)

I ordered them last week and just got it in the mail the other day. I haven't installed it yet and now I'm actually deciding if I even want to open them or keep them sealed as a sort of collectible lol. I actually really like how my GZR set sounds in my p-bass currently so that's sort of the reason for install hesitation.

Clearly you need to build a new bass for the new pickups. :smug:

It's funny - since Le hasn't actively used that bass in years. He's a (the) Dingwall man and has been for a long time.
Fair, but most of the stuff he is known for he recorded with that bass.

So, please forgive my ignorance, but how would these differ tonally from the current EMG active P pickups? More mids or less? More even across the range?
A friend received his. Hasn't had the change to really test them or sent me some Audio files, but he said the difference is that the modern EMGs are voiced to sound more modern and are great for rock. These Lee sklar he said sound like you took a vintage pickup and tried to EQ them into a modern setting. How good that is we will see soon.

Also new, the Doug Wimbish PJ Set. They thoughtfully allow for either neck or bridge width on the J to fit your particular bass.
