Left hand - 1,2,4 / 1 finger per fret / whatever works?

(I will, at times practice a whole set of music with my eyes close

I thought it weird but I do that myself. I very seldom look at the fretboard either. I might a little if I'm playing my backup bass.

I use the 1 2 4 because of upright bass and small fingers

Use what is best but 1 2 4 I really enjoy and find best for myself

For me it's 1-2-4 up to fifth position, OFPF higher than that, and 1-2-3 in higher positions on the B and E strings (I have a tragically short pinky).

Coming from guitar, my instinct is to use all four fingers. I have very small hands (I can share gloves with my wife!) but my left hand has a very good stretch after years of guitar.

However, it does feel sometimes uncomfortable or even almost painful to play OFPF on the lowest frets, so I change to 1-2-4 or 1-2-3 if it feels better, with the cost being sometimes more hand shifts up and down the neck needed.

At the same time, I don't usually like the sound of the low frets on higher strings, so I rarely want to play on the 1st-to-4th frets position or "box"... I always tend to get away from that and I'd rather play those notes on higher frets and lower strings, as they both sound better and feel more comfortable to me.

I learned one per but unless I have a reason to use my ring finger, I prefer to let it just reinforce and maybe pull some light muting duty so like 80% 124.
