Hey there I currently have a Fender Jazz Bass. I go to a regular acoustic Irish/Folk session (play my Bodhran) but I would like to get more practice playing this folk music and of course the electric bass just does suit that venue. Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent left handed acoustic? Knowing that us lefties are a small portion of the population I don't want to buy a beginner one and get stuck with it as it will be difficult to sell if I want something better.

Lefty looking for an acoustic bass

I have no direct knowledge, but I suspect there are not many cutaway ABGs made for lefties. Which pretty much limits your options to non-cutaways. With those, all you would need to do is flip the nut and reverse-load the strings. If the bass has a slanted, compensating bridge, that could be a problem best sorted out by a luthier. Do nothing, and you could experience serious intonation issues.
Contrary to your reservations about beginner-level instruments, I would go with a large-bodied non-cutaway Dean. This you could convert to lefty and then reverse it to sell as a righty if/when that time comes. Lots of folks on TalkBass think quite highly of Dean acoustic bass guitars.

Used Dean lefty ABG’s pop up from time to time on eBay, Reverb, Guitar Center, Music Go Round and Sam Ash.

I really do not want to attempt switching a right handed to a left. I am going to take a look at the ones available at my local music shop just to get a sense of their size and how they sound - then I will see which of them have a lefty model available to order..any other recommendations welcomed
