Leon Wilkeson

That agreement is mentioned on Wikipedia in the Leon Wilkeson entry:
"Wilkeson's death also put the group in a strange position, since an
agreement with Ronnie Van Zant's widow stated that at least three of
Skynyrd's longtime members would have to be in attendance for it to be
able to tour and issue albums under the name 'Lynyrd Skynyrd.' The
group continued on anyway, with replacement bassist Ean Evans taking
Wilkeson's longtime spot."

There seems to be another agreement described on Wikipedia under Lynyrd Skynyrd:
"The fact that the band chose to continue after the 1987 tribute tour
caused legal problems for the survivors, as Judy Van Zant Jenness and
Teresa Gaines Rapp (widows of Ronnie and Steve, respectively) sued
the others for violating an agreement made shortly after the plane
crash, stating that they would not 'exploit' the Skynyrd name for profit."

Regarding remaining members, it says:
"Since Collins, Wilkeson and Powell are now dead, Ed King unable to
tour due to ongoing heart problems, and Pyle on the outs with the
others leaves Gary Rossington as the Skynyrd standard-bearer."

I'd been told that they had an agreement years ago that dictated the name could only be used if there were at least 3 original members in the band. If I'm not mistaken, Billy Powell, Leon, and Gary Rossington were the only originals left on recent outings. Ed King had retired (again), and Ricky Medlocke and one of the guys from the Outlaws (Huey Thomason?) were touring.

Anybody know?

Ed King has a bad ticker... thats always been a reoccurring issue with him wreaking havoc with his career. Poor guy.. I used to trade emails with him on and off for a several years. I'm just glad his stolen '59 Les Paul turned up and was returned to him intact.

mchildree, only two are original band members, Rossington and Powell, so I dunno about that agreement. I didn't find anything on their official site either.

Billy Powell passed away January 28, 2009.

If that is the studio version, I'm pretty sure it's Ed King on bass.

Rossington is the only original member of Skynyrd left. Artimus was not an original member. Actually, Medlocke was drumming prior to Bob Burns, who was the drummer when Skynyrd did Pronounced. Long history with that great band.

Can't speak to the rest of the band, but Billie Powell is not a current member. He died 1/28/09.

The new bass player ,for Skynyrd, is Johnny Colt, an original member of the Black Crowes who has also played with Train and Rockstar Supernova. When asked about receiving a phone call from Rickey Medlocke on behalf of Lynyrd Skynyrd to join the band, Johnny said, “What else do you say to Medlocke, Rossington and Van Zant? We’re talking southern rock royalty. We’re talking Lynyrd Skynyrd. The only thing out of my mouth was when and where!”... If you want to hear a tune with great Basslines, check out Mad Hatter, from Skynyrd, it is a tribute to Leon Wilkeson, recorded after his death. he always wore funky hats, so they called him Mad Hatter. Everyone should learn "Gimme Three Steps". This song challenged me... since I had been only playing the bass for little over a year at that point. I practiced it religiously and it made me smile ear to ear while I was learning it. One of the coolest basslines ever. And now that I know it, what a blast to play. Never get tired of it.

Agreed, listening to it now. To be fair to Ed King, it was recorded by him on bass.
