Les Claypool Distortion

Les Claypool has this great blended clean and distortion sound in the song, Lacquer Head. You can especially hear it on the slap solo after the first chorus. Does anyone know what kind of distortion he is using?

This is simply not true at all. The reving motorcycle type sounds you're refering to were fretless bass slides (or fretted whammy bar moves depending on the era you're refering to) through distortion. He doesn't use the Boomerang to play back samples, but to make loops from his bass signal in real time. As for distortion he used to use an ADA MP-1 guitar preamp for a number of years (and also for the frizzle fry type chorus sounds). He later switched to the SansAmp Bass Driver pedal when he started doing the Frog Brigade stuff (along with the Korg AX300b multi for envelope stuff and the step phasor among other things and the Boomerang for looping and reverse sounds). For the last Primus album (Animals Should not Act Like People) he was using the bigger Line 6 Distortion modeler and the DL4 delay pedal. For the tour he was busting out the Virus synth (which he started using around the Antipop era) for its crazy phasor sounds and some filtering. I read that more recently he's using the MXR M80 bass DI for his distortion and he upgraded to the newer Korg AX3000b. And he's bi-amping now with the distortion going only to his Ampeg 4x10s and the 15' subs getting a clean signal. His use of the DBX 160A compressor and EMG pickups also helps to shape his distinctive tone.
