Hello like-minded friends,

I have a question on lessons that I couldn’t necessarily find covered, apologies if it has.

So here is the thing,

I have dived into all the online stuff over the last year or so and I feel like I am sitting right in that intermittent range. I understand theory and can zip through all the scales and chord tone/arpeggio exercises. Work on arpeggiating through all the inversions and up and down. I’ve also become pretty good at the percussive techniques and feel like I can put a pretty mean line together.

however, I feel at this point (based on the way I educated myself), I’m all disjointed. Where am I truly ? What have I missed ? What am I really good at? What am I shite at?

I can purchase a course but I have no interest in sitting through lessons on chord tones or modes (things I’ve learned is what I mean not that they aren’t important) and don’t necessarily want to skip all around to find a good spot.

I thought perhaps zoom web based one on one lessons but can’t seem to find a good source. I’m a fairly busy guy, this is purely a hobby on the back of a usual 80hr work week and raising a family. So, I can denote about an hour or so a day. Looking for some guidance.

I was in your shoes for Guitar - I did all the online stuff - studied like crazy - triads, scales etc - then decided to do the zoom lessons- I'm on my second year of zoom (same instructor.) Made a giant difference as my instructor is huge on timing/rhythm - which has really paid off in me learning the bass which I just started working on.

When I was on my own learning - sure - I'd use a metronome "sometimes" - but with my instructor - he is like - improvise - and STAY IN RHYTHM - keep that right hand moving!! - which was new to me - I'd just noodle like I see all guitarist play - right hand playing some notes - paused not moving - playing some other notes (in my eyes I was just seeing the right hand move when they needed to play a note - I had no clue) - but he would say keep that right hand moving - "you can play wrong notes in rhythm and that will sound much better than perfect notes out of rhythm"

Anyhow - having a pro guide you - find your weaknesses - it was huge for me.

Also - playing with others is key. If you are still playing by yourself - that must change.
