Let's talk about the ProCo Rat2.

Here i just recorded this.
EQ is flat at first. When you see me mess with it I'm cranking up the ultra low light scoop on the high mid and pulled the high back to about 11. The chest thumping bass still cuts right through the distortion. Sorry for the poopie playing I'm still noob status, I tried to do clean and dirty so you can hear what is happening. Most of that was distortion around 40-80% and the filter which cuts out the mids set around 25-40%. Past that so far it just muds out. I just got it today so maybe I'll find something that works later.

I have a RAT and I love it, I use it all the time. Usually, I use it alone (not with my other pedals) and keep the distortion off and the filter and volume at full. It gives a warm, full sound to my basses (all Fender). It's affordable, built to withstand the apocalypse, and sounds great. Go RAT!!

That's how I'm gonna run this, I had thought about tossing a tiny bit of compression in front of it though. I'm gonna put it behind my gt1b and use the compressor setting in that and mess around a bit with it. It's such a fun pedal

I think that you described it perfectly - it's a fun pedal. I like the clean sound a lot and should sound great with a compressor in the chain!

I've gotta give some love to the Blue Colander Tremond as far as Rat-Style distortion goes, as well as of course the Fuzzrocious Rat Tail. Both can get super aggressive and both sounded great at low and high gain to me, with the Tremond also having a clean blend which you can switch to being a lowpass-filtered clean blend with an internal trim pot. I did demos of both:

I’ve been using a late 90s Rat pedal for years it. Mine did roll off some low end until I found a mod that just involved clipping a single component lead on the board. After that, all the low end came through and it’s been a staple pedal ever since.
I set mine to be more of a nasty, dirty drive sound instead of full blow distortion. Just enough to sound mean.

I hope this is the only distortion pedal I'll need for 20 plus years

Thank you for the Cat Tail/Rat Tail love so far!

It's a great circuit!

For the thread at large, I had an issue with my old Rat Tail last summer where a jack rotated under pressure and grounded out the signal. I was in the middle of a bunch of big shows and emailed Ryan in a panic. He got back to me within the hour and helped me with troubleshooting and a fix via email. Great customer service as well as pedals.
