That is one lucky score! Particularly given GC’s reputation of “losing” cases that are supposed to come with instruments then selling them separately. It took around 40 minutes for them to find the case for the last used bass I bought there, and they only looked because I insisted that the web ad showed one!

From that, it seems that the brown bag has spent a lot of time around $400 lately, and the black one has been there too if you look back a couple of months.

You can also keep things in your cart with Save for later, that makes it easy to track price changes on items of interest.

I've thought for a long time that for the savvy unethical person with some soldering skills, a great "side hustle" would be buying instruments that you know come stock with nice pickups off Guitar Center Used, swap them for cheap Chinese ones off Amazon, and return it. Maybe keep the case and say it didn't arrive with the delivery while you're at it. Turn around and sell them on Reverb or keep them if you like them. *I"M NOT SAYING TO DO THIS*

I would love a leather gig bag but they usually cost as much as the basses I play. Someone locally had a Harvest fine leather bass case for sale on Craigslist a few years ago, basically brand new for $300. I hesitated for a few days and then it was gone.

That much for a bag??? Even if it is leather, that seems nuts. I'll take my hard cases over those any day. More protection and a lot less $$.

I don’t see any protection in them except for scratches, which frankly are the least of my worry. There’s no way I would ever buy one!

I can agree with that.
I own two good gig bags. One Reunion Blues, the "Continental" from 15 years ago and one Harvest leather gig bag.
The Harvest was a lot more expensive, yet the RB is the better bag in every aspect but looks.

I imagine that with more wear, the Harvest will get that rugged, used look while the RB will look shabby, but I'll comment on that when the RB starts showing wear&tear in a couple of years or so.

Leather gig bags are nice, but definitely a luxury item! A competitor’s nylon mesh gig bag will always be a more cost-effective option.

But leather has survived as a clothing and shoe material because of its durability. Barring an unfortunate accident, the leather bag will look better 10 years from now; the nylon mesh/composite material bag will not. Properly treated the leather bag will repel water better. It will probably maintain the internal temperature better.

But for pure protection of the enclosed instrument, the new nylon mesh bags with reinforcements probably will protect the bass better against falls and impacts.

Especially since leather is so cheap. I used to think that leather was some expensive material that was hard to get.

Turns out, farmers throw away more hides than they sell, because no one wants them. Check out a Tandy Leather, whole hides are not expensive.

I'll never understand the upcharge on leather goods.

If you have time for a new hobby, check to see if there's a Tandy Leather near you. You can get hides and take classes, and learn to make your own case for much less than what you'd buy one for.

Yeah, it's just like playing bass. All you have to do is get some cheap equipment and maybe a lesson or two.

The oldest piece of music gear I own is a Levy's leather gig bag. It's easily 30 years old, and it's been around the planet multiple times. It still looks fantastic, protects well, and the only thing I've ever replaced is the zipper pulls (the zipper is fine, but the pulls wore through. I'd say that's $700 well spent.
