Lifetime expectation for d'Addario chromes

You can try the new Fender flats. They are supposedly made by D'Addario, and are very similar to Chromes. You can order them from Thomann for only 18.80 Euro.

DAMN URBAN MYTH! FENDER FLATS ARE NOT MADE BY D'ADDARIO. Everyone forgets that Fender bought the V. C. Squier company in 1965, one of the original makers of modern wound strings dating from @ 1890. Fender makes their own strings.

They are not similar to Chromes. Chromes are wrapped with, well, chromium steel wrap, and are shiny. Fender flats are wrapped with stainless steel and are grey. Chromes are, over simplified, "ping-thump." Fenders are growly that can get mellow.
