Light gauge Flats test: Chrome 40-95 vs Rotosound 40-100 (w/ audio)

I did these sound clips for my own benefit and thought I’d share!

D’Addario Chromes ECB80SL vs
Rotosound SM77 40-100. Both sets I picked up used, but very little play. (Chromes- like new, Rotos- week play time.)

Recorded on my Squier P, M-Track into GarageBand, no plugins or filters.

Clips go in this order:
Chromes, tone on
Rotos, tone on
Chromes, tone off
Rotos, tone off

Geez .... I think I like the Chromes after all ...even across the spectrum and very clear

First impressions were I prefer the Chrome’s tone; fuller and rounder. But the Rotos sound really good too; clear, a little more metallic and they just might sit in the mix better with the drum track.

I also prefer the feel of the Chromes. Smoother winding, more even tension. But I’ve left the Rotos on the bass after the test and they’ve been growing on me.

I agree they sound similar.

I’m actually putting a Seymour Duncan pickup in this bass this week, and curious so see what kind of difference that makes, if any.

After my pickup swap I put the Chromes back on, and haven’t looked back. Really like these strings. I think I slightly prefer the sound, but it’s mainly the feel.

The Rotos may go on a Jazz style bass I have, just for kicks, but for now they’re in the closet.
