Lightest Option for a BrokeDink

Hi fellow low enders, I have just recently had an ACDF neck fusion surgery and am now on the hunt for a lightweight 4 string 34" bass under 7lbs. Does the community have any recommendations that would help me out?

Yeah, it’s a bit of coinage, and you’d have to readjust for bass, but then I fashioned a hillbilly version out of a cheap keyboard X-stand and some guitar/bass wall hanger cradles for a friend who was bouncing back from kidney removal surgery.

I have plenty of 5s, but if I needed a 5... perhaps.

Glarry P bass. put light weight tuners better pickup and go. I put a chinese j neck on mine. if you take the pickguard off it fit perfect. I put Cabon Fiber tuners on mine but clearance was tight.. I had to file the tuners a bit. I put a titanium bridge on it too. I've done a dry fit and it light. as f. need to make a new pick guard, but got to get a job first.. lol

The Strandberg Boden bass was, IIRC, designed by someone with a medicinal background and is completely geared to be as ergonomic as possible.
It's headless (which reduces the swing weight of the neck when moving), super light and extremely balanced. Might be worth a look.

Then there are the Ibanez EHB series (E is for ergonomic), also headless, also super light.

However, I cannot stress how much the ergonomics and the balance of the bass play into that - these are nearly as important as the weight alone.

I have switched to 30” full time now. If you want to go over budget, I have a gorgeous 34” Bordwell that weighs in around 6.5 pounds I’m planning to sell.

Try G&L’s LB100, their version of a P bass. You’ll need the built to order series. Get the Empress wood option. I just sold one right at 7 pounds and had one last year at 6.7 pounds. You can choose neck width and radius, fretboard and a ton of colors. And it’s in your budget, and a fantastic bass. I currently have a new build in process. Check with Greg at Rocket Music in VA. Great guy.

Thank you everyone for your input. After reading all of the great ideas posted here, I settled on a Strandberg Boden 6lb headless 4 string. It will be here next week. Thanks again for the ideas.

If you look hard enough you can find a Spector Euro4 RST for 7.0lb.

Yes! Mine is 6 lbs 12 oz. You might also want to check Kiesel's In Sock page, they list weights. I got a Zeus bass off there that weighs 6lbs 14.5 oz.

There are always exceptions but a Sandberg UltrLight or G&L in Empress are your two consistent 34" options.
And I've never played a 7 lb Aerodyne; more like low 8 pounders.

The Empress basses from G&L can be under 7 lbs, but more often are a bit above, and sometime go over 7½ lbs.

Rocket Music currently have a Galaxy Black / Empress SB-2T for sale that's listed as 7.5 lb. The published price is over $2k, but I'm sure a chat with Greg there would get it under.

My Yamaha TRBX204 is only 6¼ lb, but I've no idea if they're reliably around that weight, or if I just got very lucky.

I have a 4 string 34 Biarnel Iter that is well under that weight. Sandberg's super light are right there also.

Danelectro and Sandberg do really light stuff. There’s a ton of options out there. I’m in the same boat. You will eventually find one that works.

Just an update, the Strandberg Boden is a fantastic sounding and extremely lightweight bass. The EndurNeck is going to take a little getting used to though. Only modifications I needed to make to the bass was to move the strap pin from the back of the horn to the tip of the horn where it belongs and swapped locations for the volume and blend controls. Now it is perfect. Thanks again for all of the suggestions.

I just picked up my second Strandberg Boden Standard 4 bass. These things are AMAZING and only weigh 6lbs. If you are thinking about the Strandbergs, pull the trigger. Great bass!

If you have the budget for it, look into a Sandberg Superlight. I'll be heading that way someday myself, no doubt!
