This bass indeed does deliver the Voice of the String™, which was one of the main reasons I bought this instrument. I have tried roundwounds (unknown brand), flats (TI Jazz), and tapewounds (La Bella black and white), and each kind has its own distinctive sound. The razor edged roundwounds tend to have a very sharp edged, biting sound much like the sharp-edged strings themselves. Since I am not a real fan of roundwound strings, I did not have any other brands available to try. The TI Jazz flats are very musical, clear and transparent, tend to be mellow, and work well with the piezo. The La Bella black tapewounds have a moody, dark sound, but with plenty of transparent mids and highs as well. The La Bella white tapewounds, currently on the bass, are my favorites. The sound is bright, as with a good roundwound, but without the metallic edge. The sound I would have to call “crystalline” as when a glass crystal is tapped; even the low notes have this quality. However, no matter what type of string I put on, the low bass notes on the B and E strings were still very deep and strong, with the fundamental and lower overtones coming through clear and articulate. The EQ is very flexible, with a mid sweep, so this bass can produce an extremely wide range of tones. The sustain is ridiculous; you can strike a note, go brew some coffee, browse through Talkbass, check email, and when you get back that same note will still be ringing.
