I think the first sounds like it's begging to be eaten alive by a loud band. Too round and boomy. Sounds great until the rest of the band starts playing. Classic Realist sound to me, but I could be wrong.

The second has more of a gnarly pickup sound for sure, but at least I feel like I'd be able to hear it on the bandstand. I haven't heard the FC, but I'm pretty sure the first one is the Realist so there you go.

Of course, I'm an Underwood guy (had a Realist for a long time) so what do I know?

I wouldn't know one pickup from another, and much as I am not a big fan of fingeer noise and piezo scratchiness the clarity of the seond pickup swings it for me. I didn't like some of the boominess in the first and the missing mids but I could live with either. clarity without overemphasizing the mid to highs or cutting too much out of is an ideal of mine nad I thought hte seond did that. to say they were both with flat eq is a tribute to each though. Nice sound btw Alexis! we can't ignore the bas players contribution to this can we!

Yo Alexis - Andrew here - thanks for this test. Right after that gig you came to at Detour and checked my new bass - I put the animas on my bass after a few weeks I really liked them- By the way I am at Detour this Tues. and Jules on weds - come down and hang at either gig if your not working and check out bass with the animas.
thanks for the insight!
Andrew

hey Alexis - yea right!! I am doing a record this monday so I am anxious to see how they fair - come one down on tuesday if your not working - it's Jeff alkhire - Allison miller, Benny lackner and myself - come and hang
thanks again for the test !

Wow, I'm very surprised! Actually, I can't really understand how the second one could be the Realist - I've been using mine for about five years now and have heard many other bassist using it and NEVER heard such a trebly sound! My only explanation is that there must have been some heavy high boost somewhere in the chain or, more likely, extremely low impedance input. Or, the new Realist is something totally different from the original one. Than I hope my old one will never break...

I'm not really surprised. I heard Rob Fahie (I can NEVER spell that name right...) play a few months ago and he had a bass set up with both a FC and a Realist. Although he didn't use the Realist at all, I really dug the sound of the FC through a Series IIa Contra. It was slightly more clear with his setup and it sounded great. Actually sounded close to his acoustic sound, which was coming from a wonderful old Tyrolean he picked up in New York.

While listening I started reading, and I was not surprised by the outcome. I have had the 1st pickup for a really long time and am very pleased by it. I have never liked the second. I've never had one but I've heard many people use it and I'm always displeased. When people use the realist I still wish that I could hear the bass...I feel its always muddy and never clear. Anyway.

I'm happy with the outcome because the one that I and most people like better is the one that I use.
