The advice about getting a proper setup first is good. I'm somewhat new to bass playing and my entry level SX Jazz was throwing some issues at me.

My first thought was I needed new pickups. But a bass knowledgable friend asked me to drop by and he went over the whole thing. It needed fret work, action was too high, and some other minor things needed tuning.

By the time I got it back it felt like a bass worth 5x as much, it played that much better. It's still stock, but sounds and plays great. I went from occasionally wanting to play it to now playing it as often as I possibly can. Hope that helps.
