I agree with mchildree that mic's mounted to the instruments are not the best anwser, as he mentions the working of the mic is lost so the dynamics get lost.
In our experiences over the years with various small mic's that attach to the instruments we've actually found that the feedback problems increase as the mic is so close that the loop starts and you can't pull away from the mic. So the feedback builds into a howl or big squeal and the player can't cut the cycle by pulling back from the mic or moving slightly.
It is especially true for guitar and banjo, at one point we had limited success attaching a foot pedal (on/off) to the small AKG clip on mic on the mandolin and using it when the mando jumps in for the lead and using a 57 shure for the rythm.
Alot of extra work, used up another channel on the board and the player had to really be on his toes to remember to step on the foot switch at the right time to start his lead work.
Playing louder and softer usually results in timing problems and mistakes as the player is now struggling and out of his normal comfort zone, for those reasons and tonal reasons we tried and immediately dropped the use of pickups on all the instruments other than the bass.
