Lo-fi timbre

Hello guys! Recently I was listening to a kind of lo-fi song and wondered how to reproduce the bass timbre. I have heard somewhere that this kind of sound is reached using lot of compression pedal. Anyone could relate if it is true? I have not tested yet, because I'm afraid that the output gets too loud, as usually while using compression pedal simulator on bass. But it seemed too soft and "warm" for only compression. If there is any plugins that are used to this kind of music could you recommend me also? :)
