Locating problem with my Ibanez

I have an Ibanez BTB with Dynamic Full Range (DFR) soapbar pickups and vari-mid iii preamp. The best way I can describe the sound is fake or synthetic, almost like a keyboard with bass voicing or like a digital bass sound effect rather than clear, clean tone. I otherwise like the bass very much, and would like to hear suggestions what do do? Should I should try swapping out the preamp or pickups? I should also probably mention that it's fretless with a rosewood board, nylon tapewounds, and natural ash body.
