Logic Pro Studio help please!

First time I'm experiencing this. Hook up my Zoom R16 as the audio interface, getting sick latency and a scratchy crunch as well.

Not experienceing it when I record directly into the R16, only when interfaced with the Mac.

Any ideas?

Latency is a problem.... record without any processing, no compression, eq or other additional signal processing.
Monitor input only from your instrument, not the routed signal (mute the output of the channel you are recording).

Decrease your buffer size to improve latency. The smaller the buffer size, the less latency you will encounter when monitoring while recording, or using software instruments.

Crunching probably means you are clipping input, pad down the input level.

I'll give the buffer thingy a try. I'm concerned after reading some forums that maybe my R16 is not a good DI for Logic. It is optimized for Cubase (ugh). I reloaded all new drivers and reloaded the R16 software as well. Still the same.

I'm not sure its a clip, as I have the gain on the input to almost nothing and I'm not getting anywhere near a yellow or red line.

By changing the input from Direct instrument in to mic'd amp I get the same, so I'm screwed. I could record directly to the R16 then upload, but I need the beats on the Logic trax to do this right. Ugh!
 
Do you have a way to monitor yourself in the analog domain, or do you have to rely on software monitoring? Software monitoring ALWAYS results in latency, it's just a matter of getting it down to acceptable/imperceivable levels. Can you split your signal and monitor with an amp while sending a DI signal to the interface, then turn off software monitoring in Logic's preferences?

One of the first things I thought about. The latency is actually into the program and recording. I took off the software monitoring and recorded with mic'd amp. I was spot on in time. When I played back the track, it was a full quarter measure behind on the recording, with that crappy crackle, but only when the strngs were struck and playing. No hiss, crack or hum when it was just sitting there, even at full volume.

I'm beginning to think it might be the USB cable, but I think what I may do for now is program and play the drum tracks in Logic, then record direct into the R16, then upload the files and merge. That will temporarily work. I might just go buy another Audio Interface, however I really, really, really like the fact that the R16, with Cubase anyway, can record 8 tracks simultaneously.

This is one for the Samsontech boyz....

If so, that means you're experiencing system latency not just on the A/D conversion, but also the D/A conversion. Sounds to me like the weak link in tour chain is either that AD converters in your interface, or the USB cable as you mentioned.

A/D and D/A coversion delay is pretty moot because A) it can't be avoided even under direct monitoring conditions, and B) it's only a millisecond each way.

It's not the USB cable. Digial cables aren't like analog ones, where you have successful tranmission but something sounds wrong. Either they work or they don't at all.
 
A millisecond each way would be great, but it sounds like the OP's problems are enough that he's out of time, ie more than 1ms.

I'll agree that it might be something other than the AD, but without knowing more specifics it's pretty tough to diagnose, and I've witnesses AD's being the source of substantial/unplayable latency.
