looking for a Bass

hey guys, i am looking to get started playing bass. i have played guitar for 9 years give or take and want to pick up bass. i am wondering what are some suggestions one what to get. anywhere up to $500. i play alot of metal but i want something that plays well with whatever i chose. i like the way thunderbirds look i have yet to play one because the music store near me does not carry gibson. what are your thoughts on that? should i go 4 or 5 string? thanks for any help.

4 or 5 string? Depends on what you need now or anticipate that you'll need in the future. How often do you play below a low-C?

If you are an ex guitar player you will probably like the feel of the Ibanez SR 500. I like this bass a lot and it was my shift from guitar to bass bass. The neck feels a lot like a guitar neck rather than a fat clunky neck like you will find on a fender. I also have some fenders but I bet you will love the feel of that Ibanez. The bartolini's are good pickups and the electronics seem well made. I can cet the sound I want out of it and all. I bet you can beat this price if you look around and maybe hit a Guitar center on a sale.

Dean Edge Q4 or Q5 are decent basses for the money. Ibanez also has several to choose from in that price range.

id have to say anything in the sr or srx series by ibanez would suit perfectly, they are relatively low price, good to great quality, i have several basses that are over 2-3000 dollars and i still use my srx 695dx for all of my recording/ gigging for my metal band, it handles all tunings and doesnt get "muddy" another thing you'll want to check is string spacing on your new bass, you'll probably want a tight spacing and there are many bridges that can be adjusted for that. also the srx series is generally the better series for metal given the factors of its extremely high output, active electronics, and overall tone (and speaking of the tone its a very broad range that you can dial in on these.) i believe that my first srx cost roughly 600 bucks and i only just recently upgraded to a "better" model (same series) after about 5 years of gigging and recording with it.

+ 1000 on the SRX. Just made a quick video of mine,SRX 650, after i got the wiring down for it to be passive. Essentially has the same tone,just no longer active.

try peavey zodiac BXP its got fast maple neck( Jazz style) with P/J pickup conf that hammers out metal tunes and is a true rock monster you can get them $379 and under I just picked one up

You might also look at the Schecter basses.

The Ultra Bass is under $700, plays great, is well built, and definitely pays tribute to the Thunderbird.
