I'm yet to find the high-gain saturation pedal of my dreams.
The sound I'd like to achieve would be something very open-sounding with sustain for days and loads of overtone, harmonics, chime, call it whatever you want.
On the fuzz side, I tried the SuperFuzz circuit, which is great at what it does and I like the chime brought by the octave but it sounds a bit too synth-like and compressed to me.
I tried the Green Russian Big Muff, which led me in the right direction towards what I want but still sounds quite compressed somehow.
I then moved on towards the distortion side, looking for more open-sounding saturations. I recently tried a Rat, thinking "eh Sunn O))) right?" and as it nails the tone and I like the dynamics, I feel like it's very direct and kinda lacks overtones.
Right now, I'm playing on a Boss HM-3 Hyper Metal, which kinda sounds like a less-compressed Big Muff with a sharper attack to me. I like it, it sounds very wide and rich but I feel like I'm 90% there from The One, so I'd like to hear ideas and suggestions in order to try to A/B them and narrow it down to The Very One.
I recently saw videos of the Mesa Boogie Throttle Box, which seems kinda nice, very wide-sounding and very high-gain, to say the least. So that's a contender, but not on the same budget.
I also thought of maybe trying other variations of what I already tried like an Op-Amp Big Muff or a Rat variant. I don't know if that will turn out to be relevant or not.
Any other ideas or suggestions that might fit the bill?
As for the details, my main bass is an Epiphone Jack Casady, I mostly play heavy-plucking fingerstyle with an almost always-on Nobels ODR overdrive, both saturation pedals are in a Boss LS-2 channel with a clean signal in parallel so it does not have to be a bass-specific pedal, pedals over 4 knobs make me angsty, the genre is around the post-rock/doom/stoner/shoegaze corner and I love feedback and hour-long drones.
