Looking for a light Jazz bass

Thinking out of the box gets me to 5.5 pounds...

Not MIA though, will MIG do?
Reading the ad, says the body itself weighs 5.5lbs. I'd like to know the fully constructed weight.

I'm going to start a project to make my '95 MIM Jazz as light as can be. It's already a fairly light bass, but I'm wondering how much weight is in the THICK poly finish. I believe the body may be Basswood but not sure.

My thoughts are to completely strip the original finish and go with a thinner, Re Ranch aerosol Shoreline gold, with a thin nitro finish. Ultralite tuners would be installed. I was thinking Hipshots but John_K likes Resolites, so I might explore them.

The lightest Carvin they make that might fit your needs is still 8.25 lbs. It's a passive SB4001

The lightest Jazz Bass I ever had was a "Frankenfender" with a '65 Jazz Neck on a '63 P Bass Body. The builder routed cavities for all 3 Pickups and stereo wired it (J one side-P the other). There was so much wood routed out it was extremely light.
Unfortunately, it was nicked off of an Air Florida flight in 1980. :bawl:It's easy to recognize-a massive Marcus Miller type pickguard over all the pickups, 2 1/4" output jacks on the face of the instrument, and only stain but no finish.
I'm sure no one has see it out there-it was stolen from the Miami International Airport so it's probably gigging in the Caribbean or South America somewhere by now.
However, it seems you could take a relatively light Alder body and do more hollowing out and get the weight down, particularly with light tuners to cut down on the neck-dive factor.
FWIW, the SB4000s and 5000s sound awesome! The 4001s would probably sound that good.

Fender? check
USA? check
Jazz neck? check
7.5 lbs? check
bridge jazz pickup? check

My USA Fender JP-90 is 7.5 lbs. Thin Jazz neck with P-J pups on a blockish poplar body.

Close to a Jazz. I have no idea why these are very inexpensive, other than poplar dings easily and the pickguard shape is UGLY.

Yes!
Including the active preamp and battery.
Approx. 4.7 for the lightest version.

I can vouch for this. My passive Basslab Soul JJ V weighs 5.2 lbs and balances perfectly. It's the 1 bass I have never even thought about flipping. The fact that it's completely hollow from bridge to nut gives its' tone massive girth as well. Truly an unbelievable instrument. The cherry on top is the fact that it never needs adjustment, even though my town gets to extremes of -40F and <5% humidity in winter and 90F and 90% humidity in summer.
