Looking for Cliff Burton style pedal.

You need an old Morley Power Wah and an EHX Big Muff. You can't miss the old Morley's, they have a stainless steel case and an obnoxiously obtrusive built in power cord. I have one, a 1974. They never wear out because they work on light, there is no mechanical friction to erode the moving parts. Check Ebay, that is where I got mine.

I found two currently listed on ebay for you:

I know the links are long, you may have to copy and paste.

If you back off the volume on your bass to Around 7-8, and roll the tone as much as 1/2 to 3/4 down, put your Wah FIRST, stick a bypassed "NON-true bypass" pedal in there next (any boss, dod etc. will work fine) then your fuzz.

This may get you into Cliff's realm, but a lot will have to do with what bass you're using.

BTW, you can experiment with flipping the fuzz and wah around.

I swear there is a thread about this somewhere. I could be wrong, but I thought it was decided that Cliff never had a muff, or something along those lines. I think it was decided that based on production time lines. Like I said, I could be, and probably am, entirely wrong.

If I find what I'm talking about, I'll link it.

What he didn't have was a Russian or Sovtek Big Muff, because Sovtek didn't exist while Burton was alive. It could only be one of the original U.S.-made Big Muff pedals, before EHX went under in the late 1980s.

(I'm most likely the guy who posted what you had read before ;))

Oh, and to the OP: Could you tell us what your rig and bass are? And what pedals you tried?

The quickest way to getting close is having the right two pedals. That's right - not one, but two pedals. A Big Muff and a Morley Power Wah. Originally, it was an old chrome Power Wah Boost, which is no longer made. The modern reissue Power Wah is the closest you'll get without trying to hunt down the original, and IMO it'll work fine for what you're trying to cover.

+1

That was what I was looking for and couldn't find it for the life of me last night.

You REALLY don't have to get the same gear to get the same effect. Case in point:

*they were extremely broke when Kill 'em All was released.
*they used what they had.

I made do and sounded like I knew what I was doing by using my old DOD wah pedal and clipping the living snot out of my old Peavey Mark III combo amp.

I used to be a Cliff junkie, too. I even looked like him, hahaha.. (I soooo never got laid in high school...)

The Bass Guitar Mag of April 2006 had a tribute section to Cliff Burton. It had a photo of Cliff in a concert and showed the pedals that Cliff had in the Kill'em All Tour (At least I think that was that period because he was using the Rickenbaker).

Here's the photo:

On the pic there is 3 pedals, on the center is the Morley Power Wah Boost (or Morley Power Wah Fuzz as mencioned in the Bass Guitar mag, but it's common to this type of magazines commit mistakes when describing the gear of artists). On the right is a green pedal, similar to Maxon, I don't know which pedal is, but I think it might be a flanger or phaser pedal - some of Cliff live solos have a type of modulation in the sound.
On the left side is black pedal which is allegedly a fuzz pedal. The model and brand of pedal are again unknown to me.

Maybe someone in TB forum could identify them.
