Looking for Epiphone Jack Cassidy soundalike.

I had a Jack Cassady for a while and loved the sound but never really liked the neck or the ergonomics. Now I listen back to a few recordings I did with that bass and would really like to get the sound again. My only current EBG is a Squire CV Jazz, which is lovely but very different. So - any suggestions on a bass that will give me something like the JC sound but with a narrower neck and less (i.e. - no) neck dive? And I'm talking Squire, Epiphone money please!

The simplest solution would be to install a JCB-1 humbucker with VariTone control at the same location on another 34" scale bass of your choice. Unfortunately, I don't see that that electronics setup available as an after-market package, so you may need to find a donor instrument. You may want to reach out to Epiphone directly.

Yeah, I thought of that but couldn't find a pickup (didn't look that hard). I haven't tried going straight to Epiphone though.

A P-type body would be the most logical donor candidate. You could rout out space for the pickup and VariTone under the pickguard and you could always return the body to its stock configuration if you're not happy with the results.

Comparing Semi-Hollow to Solid body? Putting an Epiphone pup and varitone control on a solid body isn't going to get you the results you're looking for.

How do the Epiphone Jack Casady electronics work?

From the thread linked above, you may need a serial number to get the parts, but that should be easy enough to snag from a recently ended auction listing somewhere. I don't think there's a big market in counterfeit JCBs.

I could not disagree more. I own 125 basses and can do A-B comparisons in real time and a solid body vs Semi-Hollow/Hollow are worlds apart regardless of electronics or tone wood.

Thanks for your input, @BeeTL - without discounting what B-Mac says, I'd be willing to try the JCB electronics in a solid body if I can get hold of them, and could always then look for a suitable semi to mod if that doesn't get me close enough.

However, to answer your question, I'll need to start comparing as I just got my JC in March. Plus with the varitone there are going to be exceptions, meaning that one or two may sound similar compared to the JC on one varitone setting, but not the other two.

I'll whittle it down to these (listed below) and I'm guessing it'll be similar to the Dillion DB-534-004 or Super Nova...but I'm just taking a SWAG right now.

Toughest thing with comparisons is that I won't have all the same strings. So, besides sound, what concerning the ergonomics bothered you the most to the least? Semi-hollow/Hollow always seem to bother players who are used to solid bodied basses. The body thickness and sharp edges being the biggest ergonomic issues? There are some extra thin Semi-hollow/Hollow bodied basses out there, like the ESP LTD TL-4 and the Hofner Very Thin that would still have the S-H/H vibe and be more comfortable compared to what you're used to.

However, to answer your question, I'll need to start comparing as I just got my JC in March. Plus with the varitone there are going to be exceptions, meaning that one or two may sound similar compared to the JC on one varitone setting, but not the other two.

Wow! Ok, there must be something in there that's similar - though, of course, most are likely to be out of my justifiable price range. I only ever really used one of the Varitone settings but now that I haven't got the bass, I can't remember which one!

@B-Mac I don't have a dog in the hunt here, but I'd bet $50 that on a recording I could not tell a P-bass with a JCB pickup from an actual JC bass, especially in a full band mix.

Perhaps I have tin ears.

I'd also suggest, if you have the chance, to play one of these if at all possible. Past JC owners appear to really like these. Guild Starfire I. @FlyingPigSound has one and used to own a JC Sig.

I had a Jack Cassady for a while and loved the sound but never really liked the neck or the ergonomics. Now I listen back to a few recordings I did with that bass and would really like to get the sound again. My only current EBG is a Squire CV Jazz, which is lovely but very different. So - any suggestions on a bass that will give me something like the JC sound but with a narrower neck and less (i.e. - no) neck dive? And I'm talking Squire, Epiphone money please!

Jack Casady Yeah the first three albums are recorded with a Fender Jazz bass, and I customised that by adding a P pickup right butted up against the neck. So in essence I had on the very bassy end of the speaking length of the string an offset P pickup and then two bar pickups of the Jazz bass.
