Looking for growl under $1500

I own a Ibanez sr755 and it definitely growls with the nordstrand split and single coil pick ups. Ernie ball Round wounds with a pick and a GK amp and cab boosted 3/4 high mids.

It's a subtle growl that can be pushed with some tweaking and putting the amp on boost setting.

I recommend that you try a Spector Euro 5. See if it's longer 35" scale "agrees" with your hands. If so, finding a used Euro 5 in your price range will be pretty easy. When I think of a bass with a growly tone, Spector is the first bass that comes to mind.

Spector's Customer Support is second to none, even on used Spectors. They have a unique tone, their ergonomics are outstanding, and they're built like tanks.

My first thought was Corvette. Maybe a Thumb, but that's a bit more specific sound. The 'vette is a more all round kind of bass. They can be tough to find though. The nearest place that stocks them to me, is 2 hours south, and it's a Guitar Center, so there's that. None of the local stores here stock any bass gear beyond squier and fender mexi stuff, mostly starter packs and cheap gear. Frustrating.

Fellow Warwick Corvette user here, 10/10 would bang best bass

I don't think you can make a fair assessment on used basses in a guitar store that doesn't bother with setup or changing strings before they hang it on the wall. You have to consider the condition of the strings and give your best guess about what brand/model strings are on it. A setup and a new set of strings could make all the difference.

Why not a five-string P bass? That'll be fuller and beefier than the Jazz with a growl all its own. You mentioned twice that you prefer Fender ergonomics, so it seems like a natural fit.

Get a Squier VM or a MIM and drop some bad-ass pup of your choice in there. That'll come in well under $1,500. If you're really intent on spending more, go American. Even new, it'll probably still be less than your limit.

If you want that growl then +2 on the P-bass......Oh and the SPB-2 Duncans have a bit more mid range, just an fyi...
(my choice for the money would be the Squier VM)

You should try a 5 string Precision. You've mentioned a couple of times how you liked the Fender ergonomics, and Precisions have a very classic growl. I would suggest trying one with the 62 Custom Shop pickups in it. I think most recent standards, specials etc. have them already in them.
