So I need to ask the hive mind for some suggestions.
Ive played Stingrays and Fender Jazzes almost constantly and always felt at home with them and comfortable. However, I picked up a Warwick Streamer Doublebuck a few years ago. Its one of the ones with the new thinner necks. HOLY HELL! Since then Ive almost never wanted to play my Stingrays or Jazz live anymore. Its totally about the comfort of my fretting hand and the way it hangs on my body. Ive heard guys complain and be nitpicky about bass ergonomics and always thought they were just OCD and unflexible, but after playing a bass that sits soooo comfortably during performance picking up my Stingray or Jazz just seems "clunky" feeling and now i understand.
What specifically makes the difference in experience happen is kind of a mystery to me. My jazz has the same width nut and I always thought that jazz width made the real difference for me, but not so. The neck profile is a little thicker on the jazz, and im guessing its what causes the difference i feel in the upper registers is night and day. Notes that stress my hand a little are almost effortless on the neck of the warwick. ( I know, technique makes a difference, but for me its mostly a cyst in my wrist that makes some hand movements difficult) . Also, it seem like the overall geometry of the Warwick puts the neck sticking out longer, as if the whole shebang is moved a bit and this too seems like it keeps my hand in a less stressed position, but I dunno.
Anyway... my question is this... ( and its ESPECIALLY directed at TB'ers that have played and are familiar with the Warwick neck experience)...
What other basses have you experienced that have a similar feel in the fretting hand, OR... what should I look for in a bass to copy this feel? Id like to have more than one bass as an option for this kind of natural comfort in playing and dont want to just buy a SECOND Streamer. Nor am I in the financial position to track down another one anyway. Theyve gotten really pricey lately. Somebody else HAS to have a similar feel. Im thinking perhaps Ibanez, but Im not really a fan of their stuff, but honestly... function of the tool is more important...
