Looking for new head

[lastminute]

I'm going to be cruising the used section of any place where amps are sold....looking for a head to replace my crappy Carvin R600.

Looking for a modern sound, to give me a grinding tone of rock.

My choices have been narrowed to:

Markbass Little Mark III (Ive heard Markbasses in general are good)

Acoustic B600H (has lower price on it's side)

Gallien-Krueger 700RB-II Bass Head (middle ground)


What are people's opinions?

love the lmiii, doesn't do dirt at all, though its clean sound is nice and fat and very tubelike imho. but if you like grind, they're coming out with a little mark rocker head that's supposed to be more aggressive and able to get dirty. the gk is a time-proven classic and it would probably get the job done for you as well. the acoustic has price on its side and it's not a bad amp, but i don't think it's in the league of the others.

and no, sorry, i don't know when the lm rocker's coming out.

I would go with the GK (at guitar center its $599), so the price is good.

Id go with the GK for sure, the markbass is more of a clean tone and the acoustic is kind of well.... in my opinion just blah. You can get the gk off evilbay for a good price as well used.

Yeah it sounds like GK is what your after if your after a modern gritty sound, If you really like your grit maybe try an 800 cos they're only 300 watts and you can crank them to get an apparently very nice poweramp overdrive (something GKs are designed to do unlike most SS amps).

Also look at newer Carvin bass amps...BX500, BX1500 or B2000.

They aren't anything like the old Redline series. I've owned the R600 and now have the BX1200. Night and day difference.

Look in the classifieds section for GK 700RB......I think I saw something there recently that may interest you......

The new Carvin amps are smoothe, punchy, have awesome definition and are very loud. They don't try to push a mountain low end unless you EQ them to do so.

For grindy rock tones, the GK 700RB is your best choice. The Markbass heads IMO, don't do well with grindy style pick playing tones. With a distortion pedal in front of it though, that would work/
