Michael Formanek Very Practical Trio: Even Better

Composer and bassist
Michael Formanek b.1958 bass
Michael Formanek's Even Better is an adventurous compilation of bluesy abstractions with surprising twists and turns. Opting for a drummer-less trio format, Formanek gives himself room to negotiate the terrain with his own intimate rhythm. He is aided and abetted by his longtime collaborator, saxophonist virtuoso
Tim Berne b.1954 saxophone
Tim Berne, and
guitarist extraordinaire

I saw Mike Nock with this band at Sweet Basil's in NYC in 1978, touring in support of this album. There was also the addition of John Scofield on guitar (who's not on the album). He was playing his cherry red Gibson 335 dot marker (before he started playing his Ibanez). I can't say that I have a good story to go with this. I just remember that we were sitting at a table very, very close to the band, and at times it felt like Scofield was almost in danger of hitting me with the headstock of his guitar. It was cool being so close and I remember it as a good show. Playing guitar at the time myself, I was mostly focused on Scofield, who I thought played very well. I brought a tape recorder and had it on cassette for a while. But I erased it a long time ago.
