Looking for the best samples live.

The thread title sucks but I'm basically looking for a piece of equipment I can buy that lets be use samples and other cool sounding stuff easily, while playing live.

Something similar to what manu chaos bass player uses here.



Any helpfull tips would be greatly appreciated.

Boss Dr. Sample SP202? Pretty cheap, I don't know how elaborate you want to get.

The Akai MPC samplers are pretty much the industry standard, but they're pricey new. You can probably pick them up used for a decent price on the 'bay. I know that Wayne from Static-X says that's what they use on stage.

I use my boss RC2 to play samples. You just set the playback setting to "one shot" when you save the sample you've recorded. I use a palmtop studio to record mostly stuff from movies then run that into the looper, press play on the palmtop and stop the switch to start saving. When the sample has played to where you want it to stop press the switch to stop recording.

Another slightly more lo-tech way to do it would be to tape the samples you want on a handheld tape recorder and then play it back through your pick ups. Pretty ghetto but it sounds kinda cool.

i think if you don't use all its features, a mpc would be overkill.
get a roland sp-404sx. cheaper, smaller, sd card, no loading time,…
i also would recomend a midi foot controller, that can send note messages, so you could trigger the samples while still having both hands on your bass.

i also used to have a small rc-2 looper for one shot samples. but it sucks if you want to play more than one sample per song, as you have to choose your sample via knob first, and then have to wait 'till it's loaded.

Hmm.. interesting suggestions. I'm looking for something with tons of range that can play multiple samples at once with ease. Price is no big deal, I'm really looking to get what's gonna be able to give me he highest quality sound, with the easiest control, and the most options live.

Another suggestion for a Boss/Roland tabletop sampler.

The 202 and 303 can be had relatively cheap too.

The 202 and 303 both have 8 samples pads per bank, 2 on the internal storage and 2 on external card
The 404 has 12 sample pads with two banks on internal storage and a further 8 banks (I think) on external CF cards.
Obviously if you want to trigger live and with your feet you're going to need a midi floor board.

I've got a 303 and a 404 and both are pretty powerful units with multiple samples running at the same time, not sure off the top of my head how many though. Gate, Loop and Reverse options that are handy easily accessible buttons, they've also got inbuilt effects that can be added to a sample. They both have a mic input on the front with a gain level so you could sample live using that input. All the other inputs on these two are stereo inputs and outputs.

Having thought about it you can use an RC-2 with an extra footswitch (Boss FS-6) to cycle up through the saved samples if you wanted a pedal based option. Only problem re-sampling would need a turn of a knob and the external footswitch can only go up in samples not down.
