Losing tone?

Everyone has a different tone, most people on this board could recignize it if someone posted Jaco playing something. Why? Because he had a distinct tone. As your tecnique changed, so did your tone. Once you get good tecnique you can work on shapping and changing things to get a tone you want.

Thats so true. but what if some one could play just like jaco and would you be able to still tell the differnce?

I had the very same thing happen to me this past year. I thought it was my bass, and I fooled with it changing my strings to heavier strings, changing my battery etc. etc.

The end result- over-enthusiastic plucking was the culprit.

Playing really hard (I was actually sort of slapping at my strings) up closer to the neck cut the guts out of my tone producing attack without any real sound (almost like a noise gate or compressor kicking in.)

Trying to beat out volume instead of turning up the amp was also part of the problem.

Playing closer to the bridge allowed me to "vent"without losing so much tone.

OK any suggestions for me? And guys is part of losing my tone from my amp/bass do to playing my bass on a David eden head/speaker combo last 2 weeks in a row?

Dead strings would have you missing high end and liveliness, but shouldn't make you notice a lack of warmth.

Sorry my bad I will next time re read before posting again. Anways guys I found a new tone I love, Its playing with a pick but I have one problem with it. The problem I have is I am missing the strings at times and then I don't. What should I do? just keep practicing with the pick untill I don't miss the strings any more or go back to my finger style?

Do not replace fingerstyle with a pick! Add picking to your arsenal of techniques, but dont replace it just because you dont like your tone! If playing with a pick has changed your tone for the better, it is not a fretting hand problem, you must be playing too hard. Try raising the action some, that might help.

Yes it got my tone to sound much better. Anyways you said have them raise my action and try that? BTW the pick is filling the room with warm sound once again.
