+1. I always considered the hold-down-the-fort thing the absolutely necessary minimum.... that's what bass needs to do.... but why shouldn't it also do more than that
Sure it can be more, anything can be more but when you are do ing the " hold-down-the-fort thing" if you are not putting ever once of your being into holding down that fort then you are not doing it right, it is about absolute focus on playing tight, yet you can have a "more interesting sound" if you want but that shouldn't matter as much as fort holding, if you blow the groove to change your sound be it pedal or even your tone control on your bass then you blew it.
