I just bought a '96 MIM fretless Fender Jazz bass a few weeks ago and I've realized that the tuners have some play in them. Is there any way I can get rid of this or do I have to buy new tuners?

It depends on where the play is. If it's in the gears, then you should just replace them if they're not tuning properly. If it's in the head, you can just use superglue.
First, check what Ben recommended. An additional thought: depends on whether it holds tune or not. If you can tune up to pitch and it stays put, then you don't have to take action quickly.
