I thought I heard a low Eb.
If a bass and not a synth,
That suggests a 5 string .
Any info about this artists' basses - whether he recorded with 5 string -is appreciated

There’s clearly bass synth, by Richard Tee, and Louis Johnson mostly stuck to a Stingray once they came out. No idea what he used or how he tuned.

Are we talking about the original studio recording of "Give Me The Night" by George Benson, from his 1980 album of the same name (produced by Quincy Jones)?

If so, A) yes there are a lot of low Eb in the bassline; and
B) that's not Louis Johnson, it's Abe Laboriel.

No idea whether he downtuned or used a 5-string.

Abe usually used a 5, something by Yamaha most likely. And he did play on Benson’s album, but all the credits I’ve seen for the song itself say Louis. It would make more sense if Abe played it but that doesn’t mean Louis didn’t bust out a 5 or retune a 4.

I’ve never read the actual liner notes to the album so I don’t know what they specify.

I do know that the Wikipedia article I cited previously is pretty specific in noting that Laboriel played bass on “give me the night” (not that I think Wikipedia is such a great authority).

Also, I have a transcription of the GMTN bassline that I downloaded from somewhere on the Internet maybe year ago, and it explicitly says “bass by Abe Laboriel”

I understand that neither of those sources are authoritative… But what have you seen that suggests it’s Johnson?

A Wiki page that I misread Not my fault because it's written very confusing on the Wiki page for the song itself. So now it seems that Abe did, in fact, play it.

I assumed track 1 according to Wikipedia

But according to YouTube of all ten tracks ( a playlist )

Which is Abe
