Details

Up for sale here is a 5-string bass in pristine condition, originally built for Courtney Leonard (CL). Looking over the bass, there are hardly any signs of wear. There is only one very faint mark next the input jack, as far as I can tell.

The bass has a northern ash body, a 5-piece maple/walnut neck, and a maple fretboard with black block inlays. The body and neck both have a satin finish, making for really smooth playing along the neck and great resonance in the body. The pickups were custom designed for Brian Barrett by Howard Ulyate. They have two rows of single coil pickups, which can be selected individually in either pickup, or run in parallel in either pickup. So, each pickup has three possible settings, and the two pickups are controlled separately by the two switches installed near the bridge. The bass can be played active or passive (controlled by a push/pull master volume knob) has the LowEnd preamp, which is 2/3 bands, as the mids control can be deactivated with a push/pull knob. The knobs control master volume (w/push-pull for active/passive), pickup blend, mids (w/push pull), and bass/treble. The strap locks on the bass are recessed into the body and accomodate the standard Dunlop strap lock.

The bass was designed to maximize the depth of the low frequencies and pack a solid punch, so heavy wood pieces were chosen and the bass is definitely on the heavy side, probably about 12 lbs.

For trades, I would consider trading for a good jazz bass + cash, thinking xotic or bottom wave 5 strings. I would consider a trade for fretless bass as well.

It will ship in a hardshell case and include the original red tortoise pickguard, if you wish to switch it out. Please get in touch with any questions!

Unless Brian goes corporate, lol, anything he builds in time, will be a collectors item. You won’t see a neck like the one on this build, on a Ken Smith. I’ve sold 2 of mine, but I still have 2 of his original builds. GLWYS!
