I'm with you on Epiphone's QC, when I received my Embassy (also from Sweetwater) I had similar issues - the extreme angle of the bridge pickup, stupidly high nut, nasty sharp fret ends and even two frets which were not set properly and needed leveling.

Thanks for this review (and all your reviews). Love 'em! They are great and it's hard to keep up with all of them but I appreciate it.

One comment though, and I hope you don't mind me making it here...I am one of those guys that thinks that the most important aspect of a bass/instrument is playability and quality and that the tones you get out of it are secondary. With so much between the bass and the audience's ears, whether recorded or live performance, under your control or not, the end result is often entirely different than what I think/want the instrument to sound like.

But to me the playability and quality of the bass is primary. I would love your reviews to spend more time on the build quality-- things like fretwork, ability to get low action, body feel, fit and finish-- as you do on all the tonal aspects of the bass. I'm not saying you don't spend time on that but I'd like more time spent on playability and quality! Are there dead spots, fret edges, finish issues. I know you highlight those on instruments of dubious quality like the recent Fender and Gibson/Epiphone debacles where the instrument was clearly built incorrectly and not QC'd. But high end and boutique instruments are as much about the builder's care about finish, construction, materials etc as they are about tone (IMHO). And then the follow on support to me is very important. The ability to communicate directly with Jake Serek, for example, makes that bass all the more interesting and the ownership experience more rewarding.

Just an opinion but I want more of yours! Of course this doesn't go for your terrific pickup and preamp mods and reviews. Those are clearly about tone! :)

Hey Everyone! Today we are finally reviewing one of the craziest Stingray Special variants to date from Ernie Ball Music Man.... The DARKRAY! At first glance it may look like a regular Stingray Special, but there is a lot more here than meets the eye. Featuring a specialized and proprietary Darkglass 2 band preamp with built in Darkglass Alpha and Omega distortion circuits. They've implemented a gain and blend control to tame these beastly tones as well. Will the Darkray be worth it over the regular Stingray Special? Let's find out!

Dude, for the sake of my bank balance, and to avoid my wife's wrath, I've been trying to ignore the existence of this instrument. Your video did not help! Looks like too much fun and sounds amazing, even without the alpha/omega circuit engaged. Excellent review, thanks!

won't get an answer, but i have a HBPJ-5 SBK Deluxe6. I was able to find a pair of wilkson pickups to fit
the weird 5 string p and jazz and a black pickguard. it sound better that the OG pickups it came with but to me its still missing something. the e and a string sound low compared to some of my other basses. was wondering if i should change everything or just the OG preamp, vol/vol/tone to a nicer preamp. it was my first mod on a bass. Any help is welcomed. Thanks

Hey Everyone! Today we're taking a look at a very unique and special bass, my Form Factor Audio Wombat 6 String Short Scale Bass! We've looked at six strings, we've looked at short scales, we've looked at basses, but we've never looked at one bass that was all three! This little bass has big boutique sound with its Albridge Permaloy pickups and two band preamp. Let's check it out and see why it's one of my favorite basses to noodle around on!
