lower output?

My bass (recently rewired) seems to have an extreme amount of over output. It will peak most inputs at low volumes (the peak led light will come on). If i have it in the -15db and i play really soft it wont show.


is there a way to pad the basses output. Maybe not even the overall volume, just the power or electricity that it sends?

something's amiss, but yeh, some info beyond the presenting complaint will likely generate a more useful response.

-15db? so I'm guessing you're going through like a GEB-7 or something.

Of course most amps have a hi and lo gain input so if you're using the hi gain for a hi output bass then that's a problem.
 
im using an ampeg svt 400t.

haha and turning the volume down would help with keeping the volume low .. but that's not the overall problem. I want to still get a high volume but w/o the whole peaking of the input situation.

I wired two nobs, volume and a 3 way selector switch and a different input (one from a T40.. if that's relevant)

btw what does fwiw mean?

All of the active basses I own will easily put out way more volume than I need and will overdrive any normal amp input and even some -15 db ones. The solution is to not turn your volume control all the way open. I set mine so it matches the output of my passive basses. Batteries last longer that way too. Then you can turn your amp up to make up the volume. Having an extremely hot output doesn't give you a better sound, despite what guitar players say.

You might also experiment with lowering your pickups. If the strings are too close you'll get very high output but a bad sound. Do some experimenting with all those things suggested in this and previous posts.

You could always get someone to wire up a little metal box for you with a set of resistors in it and switces to get different amounts of attenuation, but why bother when you can easily do it on your bass?

Of course, it's possible you wired something up wrong in your bass, but I don't think that's the problem.

FWIW is an acronym for For What It's Worth - which may be absolutely zip.

Yeh the T40 may be relevant cause I know the Peavey tone pots for them were uniquely designed to permit a shift from single to dual coil. I had one but ran it straight to the jack and never into a harness. You might call/email peavey. My guess is it probably doesn't matter but it might.

When you say you turn the volume low, are you talking about the bass or amp volume? If amp, at what point does increasing bass volume clip the amp?

Also the pup height info is accurate in my experience. Most pups if they're too high you'll drive strings into them but some can definitely be too high. Altering height also alters tone.
