Luggage check-in with bass

Hi well informed community,

I might work abroad for a few months and since I do not want to stop practicing, I wonder if you guys have any tips about checking-in a bass as luggage? Will probably needs to be checked-in as bulky luggage or is it even possible to take it as hand luggage?

Does a good hard case do the job or is it not enough to compensate for the lack of respect people usually show towards anything but heir own possessions? (cynical? ^^)

Or do you people usually have a "cheaper" bass you take with you for longer journeys so that some dents and scratches won't hurt as much?

I hope I could convey what I wanted to ask and I look forward to any answers

There are many threads discussing carrying a bass onto or checking it on an airplane.

And your post is in the wrong place - this is hardware and setup.

Yes, sorry. Couldn't find the "travelling by plane" sub-forum.

So if there is anyone who can actually help by e.g. telling me where the right place for such a forum is, I would be much obliged.

I think a lot of the existing information is outdated due to the constant changes that airlines have been making in order to squeeze profit.

You can always use a Invalid Link Removed and have it checked at the gate or just purchase a bass when you get to your destination and ship it back home before you leave.

I would strongly recommend getting your employer to ship it with your household goods.
Barring that, get a Mono Vertigo or Blues Reunion Continental Hybrid bag, take only one bag & the bass as carry-on.

I have taken a double bag as a carryon for many many flights-including a few international, but you always risk having to gate-check or buy an extra seat (even if you are carrying a copy of the US law requiring them to let the instrument on board). Southwest is generally really good about it, international flights are more of a risk, because people are carrying more than on domestic flights. It comes down to the gate agent and the flight crew in the end. There are definitely ATA approve flight cases that are pricey, but will keep your bass safe.
