Double Bass Luthier in Montreal

Hi,

Jules Saint Michel might be the only place to rent a bass in Montreal. However, there might also be different options. Jules isn't known for quality, or even honesty. I wouldn't go there.

If you can get out to Hubert, he'll be the cheapest and the most bang for your buck. I bought my last bass from him, and he gave me a really great deal. He's also a really nice guy with some good advice.

NOTE: You need to book an appointment with all of these people BEFORE you go to the shop. Phone them before hand and tell them what you're looking for.

I live in Sherbrooke and used to have my bass setup and repaired by Hubert Channon..... I've stopped being his client when he refused to do a major repair on my Englehardt (I can't afford more).. He founded my instrument to be too cheap for him to be repaired....

He's good with violin and cello and he's more a luthier for classical players... Great Bow too...

If I remember he's a Christopher bass retailer (chinese brand)...

I've had a bad experience with this luthier but maybe it will be ok for you........

I'm not to sure what you are looking to get but check these guys out! When I was looking for a place Wilder and Davis strongly suggest me to go see them!

They did an evaluation for free(with a little setup) and then ask I later ask them to do a big setup, fingerboard, change the tailgut... amazing service and personnel (gotta love french guy from france :p)

Also Hubert's is a really nice guys, I also bought my bass from him Christopher hybrid and just love her but for the setup it was o-kay, not like now... Check out his bow to, I love mine.

P.S. please never make the mistake to go to Jules St-Michel. Unless you want to buy stuff and still... I personally never went cause I heard so many horror stories...

Thanks for the link to the Papineau and Rosemont guys. They seem to be new, and their info is hard to find.

I don't like bad-mouthing people without horror stories experienced first-hand, otherwise it is gossip to me. I bought my 1st wood bow, a case for the bow, and a bass wheel from Jules St Michel and those were fine. Their bass wheels are nice, with a big inflatable tire of 19cm diameter and a decent price. Their prices on strings seem quite fair too. A pack of Spiro Mittels is a pack of Spiro Mittels right? Get a good price, get the pack in your hands, pay up and go.

For setups Gilles Blouin and company do fine at Violins Etc too. Affordable, good work, not such a fast turnaround time though.

Mario is the best, but you have to book months in advance and he's quite expensive. Turnaround time is very fast, and work is excellent. He might complain if you bring him a cheap bass to work on. ;-)
