Mac Recording Question!

Hey guys, I have a Mac Book Pro, with only one jack, and that jack is for a headphone input or something of that sort.

How can i convert this into a line in port so i can record direct in on garage-band?

I have a 1/4 guitar cable jack but that doesn't work on in the headphone jack.


Im new at recording so I would not know any of this.

Any help?

That'll do it for ya. You can get these at a lot of places, not just online.

Thanks alot! I have had something like that before, but the garage band did not pick it up or notice it..

What i bought was not like that it was a small jack 1/4to1/8...will this get noticed by GB?

Also keep in mind I do not have the TWO jacks that some Mac Book Pros have, all I have is a HEADPHONE jack..

I'm not sure if GB will recognize it and if it doesn't you might want to consider getting an interface if you got the cash. Hope it works out for you man.

Thats what I was thinking of as well, haha, I was looking to see if there was an adapter of some sort but I guess not for now.

Some macbooks do allow you to switch the headphone to an input. Check your system preferences.

Personally, I've never used that type of input and had it sound like anything but garbage though.

i have an older powerbook and I bought a Griffin guitar cable (I think similar to that Monster Cable listed above). However you only have the one jack so Im not sure you are going to be able to do it. I plug mine into the jack next to the headphone jack on mine...you might have to get a USB/Firewire interface.

I assume yours is one of the new MacBook Pros, correct. I believe the jack is both in and out. I will have to check on that though. As NineSpine says, check your preferences for sound while you are plugged in and it should show up. You need to do that before Garageband can see it.

if your jack is both in and out, how will you hear what you are playing to while you record? If you can afford a $2000 computer, you can afford the $129 for a decent firewire interface.

hmm, I assume you can monitor out of the in built speakers on the mac, the headphone out and speaker outs being considered two seperate outputs. Its a little esoteric though. And I completely agree, just get an interface. Whatever you do dont be duped into getting the monster cable thing, its just a TS jack > TRS mini jack cable and you can buy or even make one yourself for a few bucks!

Look again. It's a Mac so you should find a line in. It's an 1/8th" mini jack female. The tiny icon next to it is 2 black diamonds each with a point in an open circle.

When in doubt go to the Apple site & get a pdf of the manual for your MacBook. Look through the accessories layout until you find the line in.

I'd probably suggest a USB audio interface, then you can forget about the 1/8 jack and use some bigger monitors for mixing as well.
