Our band website is not a work of art. Some would call it unprofessional. But I get positive comments from people who book us off our website saying it's "cool" and has a sense of humor to it, so it works. Whoz Playing?

I used to use bbEdit. Then dreamweaver 1.0 came along.

Well unless you know something, or REALLY want to know something, I'd recommend Squarespace. I DO know CSS/HTML/etc. but this is the easiest and most flexible I have found for newbies.

Also, you can have others update it and it's all point and click wysiwyg or pure HTML if you want that.

Before you even start to think about tools & flashy stuff, you really need to define exactly what it is that you want your site to do (for you).

Do you want to impress a bunch of other webmasters, or is it something else? If you can define what you want to end up with, the tools & techniques needed to make that happen will become apparent. The best nail gun in the world won't help you set a decent brick wall.

Just some quick clarification:

Web developers, by definition code websites. WYSIWYG editors, in comparison, spew out dirty code that can't be maintained. It's cool for personal use, but baaaad if you call it "professional".

A few developers use Dreamweaver (sans WYSIWYG tools) for the advantages of its live preview – it's good indeed. Others have preferential text editors. Selling Dreamweaver as a "professional" tool has been a cash cow for Adobe for the last few Creative Suites.

You want professional? I can show you professional tools, but unless you have a career to spare to learn the ropes, I suggest the best pre-made you can find. Then hire a geek friend for a bit of customization if it doesn't come with the theme/website/service you've chosen.
