Maki's Two Cents (part 5)

Are you a ghost or the real Maki? Just askin'...
It really depends on who's in the room. There's this bar on the Peninsula in Newport Beach which is where I lived while I went to school. I had so many one night stands that started out there that it became impossible to visit without hearing some a drunk 'wooohoooo' from across the room followed by a seductive cat call of my name.

*shudder*.

So basically I ghosted the place. Fast forward to 2015 and it's a 20 year reunion with a bunch of my college buds, so we decide to stop in for for a quick drink at our local place. Sure enough, as soon as I walk in the door "wooooohooooo". So I had to oblige her and make my way around to say 'hi'.

It wasn't pretty. This was one of the ladies from my quantity over quality days. So add 20 years of hard living to that and I think you get the idea. It took me a good 30 minutes of 'hey youuu,' and 'how YOU been?" trying to figure out her name. It wasn't until I reintroduced my buddy to her as a ploy to get her to make his acquaintance that I re-learned her name (still not entirely sure I knew her name back then, but I do remember a quickie in the alley on the way back to her place and then waking up the next morning cringing at the snoring beast laying beside me). Well it turns out my buddy forgot her name too, and apparently they had also hooked up. Which made it more awkward because now we were igloo brothers.

"What?," she said punching him. "You don't remember me?"
My buddy looked confused while rubbing his arm.
"It's Carla!," she said. "Jeesh, we even went skiing together."

She shook it off quite easily and demanded that we each buy her a drink, which we did. Luckily for my buddy he had his chick there, so he could skulk away with a reasonable excuse. That left me to oblige her for a quickie in the alley for old time's sake. Sigh. I'm not a very proud man. My two cents :)

So, any changes in amplifier or bass preference while you were absent?

I don't think so. I had my Black Beauty stolen. That was my Nirvana Black Corvette $$ 5vr. Fn thieves. I bounced around on a few different basses for awhile. I upgraded the pups on The Boob bass, but even with good pups that bass failed in comparison to to my Black Beauty. Last time I was in Japan I picked up a MIJ Fender Jazz bass for 179 bucks after the exchange rate. Funny because it was sitting right next to a MIM bass which out here in Cali is no big deal, but since I was in Japan the MIJ was no big deal. They wanted 600 bucks for the MIM. LOL. So I wound up bringing that home. But with the insurance money from the theft I was able to get another Warwick Corvette $$. It's caramel stained 5 string. I call her Chocolate Thunder. I've actually come to love this bass more than my Black Beauty.

As far as amps go, I'm still playing through a pre/power set up. I run an Ampeg SVP-BSP through a 1000W power amp modded to be mono out one hole at 4 ohms. I run this through an Ampeg 610 cab. Lots of deep woody headroom on this set up. Since the SVP-BSP is a twin channel pre, I run my pedal board through the overdrive channel. So my chain looks like this: Warwick Corvette $$ 5vr -> DOD Meatbox -> SVP-BSP -> (dirty channel) -> Aguilar Octamizer -> Custom 'Creepy Fingers Fuzz' -> MoogerFooger LPF (expression on envelope) -> MoogerFooger Bass MURF (tap tempo pedal) -> MXR Bass Auto Q -> Carver 2.0i 1000W power -> Ampeg 610. I'm happy with my set up. Because my head is old, I'm keeping my eye open for a comparable single rack space power amp, or possibly a new Ampeg or Aguilar 750 (although I played through an Eden at NAMM and I could easily see myself jumping into one of those too). My two cents :)

U2 lost something in 1987, I'm pretty sure it was their car keys, spawning "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." To date, they still perform the song and it still gets radio play occasionally. Did they check all the usual places: junk drawers, under the bed, pants, coat & jacket pockets, etc? Maybe they were stolen. Did they ever file an official investigation into the matter?
