Many Just Don't Get IT, Gibson Thunderbird

Rob Martinez said:
This is what you said:

"If the bassist for Kings of Leon plays a Thunderbird that just made them even more lame for me."

That at least implies that you "don't like the T Bird because the guy from ANY band in particular plays them" or that your dislike of the T Bird comes at least, in part, because a guy in a particular band plays one.
Basically, there are bands I already consider lame musically. Seeing the bird validates it for me visually.

I just think the look is lame. I really didn't even know who plays them or popularized them before reading this thread. Somehow I connect them with hair bands and metal and bad hard rock poser bands that I see in New York. Probably totally off base but that is my prejudice.

Furthermore, I would be surprised if I found out someone I dig at the moment is playing one. That hasn't really happened to me. Feel free to supply me with clips, videos. The one with the 'lady' rockers didn't do it for me.

And, I'm still waiting for the OP's pic with his bass... :)

Well, if you think it's lame, it MUST be great!

My opinions are not just based on what I read here...

And no, it doesn't bother me, I have opinions on just about everything, doesn't mean I'm losing any sleep over any of them.

The fact that the opinion of some anonymous guy on the internet bothers you so much speaks to you needing to ease up on the butthurt.

Chill out dude, it's just the internet.

Back 'atcha dude. You're the one all upset that some folks like T Bird basses.

Why is it ok for a person to say, "I play a Fender because I like how it plays, sounds, and looks" but NOT ok for a person to say, "I play a Thunderbird because I like how it plays, sounds, and looks?"
I agree.

HOWEVER, how exactly is it cool for someone to say "If you do not like Gibson Thunderbirds, YOU JUST DON'T GET IT!!!"???

:hmm:

I agree entirely. It's a provocative, flame-baiting statement.
And Rob makes a good point, too.

Not much to add to that...

Yet you list Entwistle, who did some of his most influential work on a t-bird and, later, his "Fender-birds" and probably did more to popularize the t-bird than anyone, as an influence -- as well as Squire who also used them. And your profile pic is with one of those Mark Hoppus basses - which look a bit lame to me - but if it works, which I'm sure it does, then cool -- but I'm not going to say you can't play just because you choose to play a bass that I wouldn't (at least, I wouldn't right now, maybe I'll change my mind at some point just like I did with thunderbirds).

Here's a bird pic I took from the stage this summer - he was playing and sounding great:

Let's see, beyond Nikki Sixx and other big hair bands, off the top of my head, and a very incomplete list, t-birds have been/are played by:

John Entwistle
Tom Petersson
Walter Becker
Chris Squire
Mike Watt
Jeff Ament
Krist Novoselic
Dusty Hill
Kim Deal
Adam Clayton
George Chambers (Chambers Brothers)
Kim Gordon
Leon Wilkeson
Allen Woody
Martin Turner (Wishbone Ash)
Tyran Porter (Doobie Brothers)
Shavo Odadjian
Horace Panter (The Specials)
Overend Watts
Tom Hamilton
Dave Pomeroy
Simon Gallup (The Cure)
Jerry Flowers (Keith Urban - country!)
Justin Meldal Johnson
Glenn Cornick (Jethro Tull)
The woman in Silverspun Pickups
Honorable mention to Chris Solberg with Santana using an Embassy.

A lot of the comments on this thread remind me of the kind of conservative mind-set that 'greeted' the electric bass when it was first introduced and dismissed it as an "inferior" toy and not a 'real' instrument.

Excellent points! Long live the Gibson Thunderbird bass!!:bassist:

I think MANY are missing this point. Do you think I would have offered any opinions had the ergonomic weenies were brought up? Live and let live, but don't bash someone's gear. I get annoyed when guitards pull that crap. I get even more annoyed when bassists do it.

This thread is cattier than a battle between two bachelorette parties.

I own play a P bass. Out of curiosity I bought an el-cheapo Epi Goth T-bird 2 weeks ago (buffed off the iron cross, put classier knobs on, now it's less goth and more .. I don't know ... noir?).

Moving the strap button .. stopped the neck dive! Using a wide leather strap .. makes wearing the bass extremely comfortable! Putting in new pots .. reduced mud and increased tonal versatility! As advertised .. it's deep, powerful and punchy!

Haters gonna hate!

Someone saying "I don't like that piece of gear (or think it's ugly, or uncomfortable, or etc.)" is not bashing someones gear. It's just stating personal preference.

If I say I hate broccoli, I'm not "bashing broccoli".
