Marbin crash course in walking bass

You don’t necessarily need to hit every chord change on the root. Any triad note can clearly define the chord depending on what you’ve set up melodically (although misuse will obscure the changes). While a walking line needs to state the harmony there also needs to be strong melodic content that supports/interacts with the soloist or ensemble or you’re not in the conversation.
 
This might seem very simplistic (it is very much a beginners guide), but his point about up and down is a huge help in thinking backwards from the next chord:
