Marcus Miller Jazz vs CIJ JB75 Jazz

Hi folks,

I am a P bass guy, however, I have developed a taste for slapping. (Hmmm....) In the process I have developed a major GAS for a Marcus Miller Sig. As there is no major difference from the CIJ JB75 apart from the bridge (can be replaced) and active pickups I cannot decide which one to get. The MM is more expensive. Reading some of the posts it seems that the majority of MM owners prefer the passive mode anyway.
Question: Is there a significant difference in sound with the active mode engaged? Does it sound alright? Is it worth to pay extra bucks for the active switcheroo when the passive would sound ok?
By the way I live in Sydney (Australia) so there are not that many examples to sample hence your input is needed.

We happen to have a 5 string Marcus Miller in the store. You're more than welcome to pop in and try it. We might eve be able to get in a CIJ so you can try then back to back. Send us a PM and we'll see what we can do.

One extra thing to consider is pickup positioning. The Marcus has a bridge pickup in the traditional 70s position, while the CIJ jazz reissue for some reason keeps the bridge pickup in the traditional 60s position. This is a very minor difference, but something to consider that might influence your decision.

In my opinion, the 70s position sounds more wire-y than and the 60s position somewhat rounder.

Get the MM. It's a phenomenal instrument.
