Markbass CMD 102P add 4x10???

I do not think you have to worry to much about blowing the speakers as they are rated at 400W RMS. Amp power at 4 ohm is rated at 500W so I dont think you will have a problem. But I must say I have never had the need to have the master past 12 o-clock when running with the cab. A full 500W is pretty loud. If you have a need for more volume then that you might want to think about a new rig.

Those ratings are thermal ratings, the cab will be limited by excursion much sooner. Probably closer to 200 watts.

Just for my own information is it normal for a manufacture to list a rating based on thermals that I would think would be bound by impedance, meaning what the speaker can handle in the coil and wiring and not base the rating on all mechanical aspects of the speaker that would include speaker movement in the cage (excursion)? so my thinking would be if the lowest denominator were the coil and any physical parts that could be damaged by heat (thermals) then that would have been the limit. So the speaker can handle 400W with out melting the coil, or extruding so much as to rip the surround? Not sure if I am asking it in a way that is easy to understand. I guess what I am trying to say is 400w is 400w if the speaker was rated to 400w before damage would occur to any thermal related parts then it was still getting 400w so the speaker cone it self was able to handle the movement.
 
The ratings on almost all commercial cabs have little to do with how much power they can actually handle those are thermal ratings. Commercial cab manufacturers dont publish the specs that really matter, like the xMax of the drivers (how far they can move in and out), or low frequency excursion limits. On most drivers they reach their mechanical limits long before they reach their thermal limits.

The combo of mixing a 2X10 and a 4X10 that are both rated at the same impedance is bad for the reasons already outlined above - the speakers in the 2X10 will be getting twice the power of the speakers in the 4X10, making it the weak link in your rig.

With a combo of a 1X15 and a 4X10, you are sending equal power to a single speaker (1X15) and to a cab with four speakers. The average 1X15 has about the same acoustic output as a 2X10. When the 1X15 is starting to strain and run out of gas, the 4X10 will be barely be breaking a sweat. Again, the 1X15 becomes the weak link in your rig.

Many threads here about it, including posts from people that have blown their 1X15 running a rig like that. Lastly, running a rig with mis-matched speaker sizes can lead to phase problems that boost or cut frequencies when used together. Sometimes it can sound good, sometimes not.

Thanks for the insight, This definitely parallels with what I've researched. The idea is to be loud, that being said rehearsal volume likely wont harm the 1x15 or 2x10. When does the risk of excursion etc. become a factor? and should i simply run a 2x15 or 3x15 rig? the 1x15 and 4x10 mix delivers some pretty sweet quality. Will an 8x10 or 3x15 have similar sexiness?
