Markbass farting out and overheating

The limiting design of the Markbass heads will result in the head significantly compressing on the low end LONG before you reach shutdown. The primary cause of the few shutdown issues reported over the years by Markbass users seem to be:

1) Cabs or combinations of cabs that dip below the 4ohm minimum. The Markbass heads do seem to be more sensitive to this than other heads, micro's or not.
2) Using 'off brand' (i.e., non-Neutrik) Speakon cables with the Neutrik combo jacks used in the Markbass heads.

As most have said, something else going on here... cable, power conditioner, whatever.

your points seem reasonable to me. Good for him that will be able to use his beloved rig (or head) for years to come, maybe it's only a cable, connector as others have said.

1st --be sure to use a #12 or #10 extension cord(no longer than necessary)

Then--- skip the power conditioner for the test.

Then--- run an external fan directly on the amp-- with "breathing space" in the rack, it it's in one.

Better yet-- take it out of the rack for the test.


It sounds like your amp is going into thermal shutdown.
It's possible that the thermal sensing device (termal couple? or thermistor?) might be out of tolerance by a few degrees)

It would surprise me if it is the heads, as KJung has said, it is unlikely that multiple heads would develop the same problem unless there is some other factor like a speaker cable or cab or something causing it...

I don't see it being thermal shutdown but I guess it is possible. The amp I experienced it had only been on for max 5 mins before it started shutting down

Couple of things, with the heads. I don't run them together, either one or the other. I have had it happen with both, mostly outside with and without the conditioner. I have Monter speaker cables and am running a 4 ohm load. primarily happens outdoors.
As far as the combo, it shut down on an indoor show. I ran it with the matching 112 speaker cabinet.
My giutar players in each band are loud, it is not a metal type band.
I probably do push the amp alittle, but never past 12:00 on the master.

I have a friend of mine that has the same issue. He has the Markbass little mark tube and ACME Series III 112 Neo. He's playing inside and he's playing a passive bass. He has a new speakon cable and new 1/4 cable. He sets the EQ close to 12 O clock position, the volume at the 3 O’clock and the gain at 12 O’clock position, it had happened about 3 time the amp stop playing. What he has done in order to get it working again he shuts off & turns it on and then it works. It is weird. I have try to figure it out, but I can’t find anything wrong. What thing should I check for?

I played through a friends LMII head and SWR cab and I had my own Jeff Berlin amp.

while I did not like the sound those amps are better built than any other amp on the market today.

turning it on and off has to be a circuitry problem. are your amps still under warranty?

I usually run one of the heads through either two 2x10 Markbass traveller cabs or a 2x10 and 115 traveller cab.
My problem is the amp cuts out or farts out if I am playing outdoors. I am running the gain and bass at noon and the master around 11:00 to noon.
The combo just shuts down if I am playing it and I have to turn it off and back on.

Do you want it to be grungy-sounding, or really clean? I ask because the way you have the controls set, it's not going ot be clean- you would need to raise the master and lower the gain, then work with the volume control to get what you need.
