Marmite, love it or hate it . . .

I have been plagued with squirrels at home recently and I thought I might be able to get rid of them "humanely" as I had a packet of cashew nuts which are coated with Marmite :

So I put a few of these near the bird feeder and thought it would put them off - but I saw one squirrel pick them up and go mad - he clearly loved them and started a manic search for more!! :p

Never tried Marmite, but I guess its the same as Vegemite?

Its an aquired taste, you only need a really small amount and you want to spread it real thin on whatever you put it on.

I don't know how they make any money out of it, a jar of Vegemite is enough for months.

I haven't had Vegemite in ages now that I think of it. Hot buttered toast with Vegemite.. mmm...

Marmite is vastly superior and vegemite is just a cheap copy! :p

The cashews I pointed out have an incredible flavour though - very strong - I felt guilty, as if I had given the Squirrel drugs - he looked as if they had made him high!! :D

I always thought people who say they hate Marmite are just doing it wrong - i.e. they spread too much - you only need a very small amount - not like jam or pate!

What you say confirms my theory, as in twiglets the amount is predetermined by the application process! :)

I always hated Vegemite and Marmite also. A few years back I decided I was going to eat it anyway just to see if I could develop a taste for it. Lo and behold, I now love the stuff and really get cravings for it. It took me a few days of having it on toaste before I was accustomed to it, and after a couple weeks I was down right looking forward to it.

I know this is an old thread, but I figured I'd do a search here to see who else is talking about this stuff. Looks like there are lots of thread about it!

I like Marmite also, but Vegemite is better to me. It has a better balance of bitterness to saltiness. The Marmite is more intense so I can see why some might like it better. For me, it overpowers whatever you put it on. With Vegemite, it's more of a complimentary spread. That said, I could live happily ever after with nothing but Marmite for my toast!

Marmite is excellent, although the Marmite cheese was surprising (and not in a "yummy" way).

My daughter and her fiance visited me at Christmas (they live in England, I'm in California). They brought me the 'catering' size vat of regular Marmite, and a big jar of the XO (Extra Old). To my taste buds, the XO tastes more like the Marmite I grew up on, and the regular seems a bit 'weak'(????).
Anyone else think the same.

Anyway, +1 on love it.
