Marshall head?

I am looking to buy my first head, and while searching I called my local music store. They said they had a used Marshall 400w solid state for $500. I asked for details and he said it had an active and passive input and a 5 band EQ. He also said that it was discontinued, which was quite a shame because he claimed that it had amazing tone.
I asked him if I could try it out, but he says he doesn't have any cabs down there at the moment. He will also give me a week to return it if there are any problems.

Has anyone tried a Marshall head? If so, is one worth $500?

If it was a Marshall tube head, I'd have said go for it, but the solid state heads...eh...I think you can do a lot better for $500, in all honesty.

The only Marshall bass head that I ever saw was the VB400 which is a tube bass head that sells for about $1500.00. I never saw a 400 Watt solid state Marshall bass head.

I think this is a 400w DBS (Dynamic Bass System) head. I've never tried one but have read some good reviews of it. I think you should try it.

Marshall did an 'Integrated Bass System' 400W@4 Ohms designated 3540.

I had the 3520 (200W@4 Ohms) and it was a *very* good sounding head, but not enough headroom for me.

As for $500, I'm not sure.

I agree I took one out to try some years ago expecting amazing things due to the output claims, it went back on Monday.
