All that lovely fane anstropic ferrite magnet material in that cab you had better be strong.

At times I do stack cabs......................but no these two. One thing I can tell you is if a cab is stacked behind me it is UNPLUGGED! No way I'm having that thing pointed at my head.

Last I knew Squire was still using the Marshall, along with an SVT2. Could be wrong, I read it, I didn't hear it from the man himself. For the rest, you are correct, they do not sound nearly as good these days.

I have used many Super Bass amps over the years... From the 60's and 70's ....
When I use them for bass, I set them with 6550 or KT88 tubes in the output stage.... just a quick re-bias to set it ...real simple..
This gives a bit more cleaner headroom and a bit better bandwidth, since the EL34's are a bit mid-range focused when used in this circuit...due to slighter lower gm and flatter plate curves of the 6550..
I believe Jack Bruce used these amps with Cream in the late 60's .... also used by Billy Cox with Hendrix Band of Gypsys had his Super Bass amps retro fitted with 6550 tubes, Billy Cox also had his 4x12 cabinets retro-fitted with 65W Greenbacks from Marshall, not to be confused with the 65W Celestion made in the 80's on up ...these were very rare factory upgrades.... He later used Fender amps and possibly SUNN as well...
Roger Glover with Deep Purple used these amps back in the day....
The trick is using a cabinet that works for you....personally the 4x12's sound great for guitar but was not my cup of tea for bass... I use a Marshall 4x15 cab with a V4-B cab and I was super happy...
I also pluged it into a Ampeg 8x10 cab and it sound pretty darn good as well....

They sound GREAT thru an Ampeg SVT810E. I used one the other day - late 80s Marshall Super Bass MKII they a SVT810E CLASSIC. Sounded fantastic. And. ..Plenty loud enough without FOH PA support with our classic rock band. Just a touch of power tube drive when I dug in hard, otherwise nice n clean.
This was a standard Super Bass with EL34s in it.

Okay had this stuff when new.
Hiwatt big clear watts hifi and fat. Marshall not even the same very different. I loved the 1992 or Superbass through an actual Marshall 4x12 100w cab the 1982 or a 50w 1935.

A Major or 100 could not push an SVT to loud volumes but could sound good.
Modern times I tried a Reeves head through an SWR cab and was completely underwhelmed. Speakers jumping and bad sound. Cab was pristine with hybrid heads. Tried a Marshall HW cab. It was poorly constructed tolex was too green and pieces were glued on corners at bottom. Worst of all sounded like pooo.
Nothing like cabs of the past.

Marshall SuperLead 100 has the best top to mids. Lows dropped off suddenly. Superbass head had an overall bass coloration that obscured pure tone but had a little more bass. Go for AD200 if you want to sound like a bassplayer. You'll get usable clean and drive too. I saw an AD200 on an Ag 4x12 in the tracking room for Morph the Cat. Get a Berg 6x10 and AD200 and don't look back.

For most of us, in todays world, a 100W amp is little more than a practice amp. If you're looking for clean bass tones you won't find it in a 100W amp. I know a lot of players actually like the distortion these amps give but I thought the point should be made.

With efficient enough speakers that go low enough, a 100 watt amp can actually be more than enough. You won't find speakers that efficient that go very low today, which is why today's rigs are power hungry - bass cabinets today are designed for efficiency and small size, not low frequency extension. The problem isn't lack of power, it's speakers that aren't designed to make good use of that power.
